Inch Chua is the latest find I have discovered from the region that is Southeast Asia and the more and more I listen to her, the more I like her. Formally she headed the band Allure but has gone solo to release her debut EP, The Bedroom. All songs were written by Chua herself and following the DIY attitude of a lot of underground and independent artists, Chua recorded the album in her house and self released The Bedroom for free on her website.

Chua has a bright yet surprisingly strong and versatile voice which she uses fearlessly on her album. She employs a guitar for all of her melodies and combines drum loops and other synthesized sounds and instruments to create an unapologetic and cohesive album. The album doesn’t sound like a failed experiment; the songs are not over-composed, over-produced, and the album doesn’t go off on musical tangents.

Songs such as “Devotion in Reality” are reminiscent of Jade and Florencia Ruiz, while the looping drums supporting a melodic line of “Rule The World” remind me of “Saanwariya Saanwariya” by A.R. Rahman. The Bedroom is a soundtrack for those sweet, quiet, contemplative moments. Definitely a little bit of spring time cheer in the fall chill.
