Sleeping In the Aviary is a Minneapolis band who has been around since ’07 when they released their debut album, Oh, This Old Thing? in 2007. The disc’s intense bursts of lo-fi pop-punk drew comparisons to The Thermals, Buzzcocks, Violent Femmes and Nirvana. With their 2nd LP, Expensive Vomit in a Cheap Hotel, the group found themselves moving towards indie-folk heralded by the addition of fourth member, Celeste Heule, on accordion and musical saw.
The band latest outing, Great Vacation!, which was released on Nov 30th, now finds the group pushing out pop-infused indie jams that tell stories. With the addtion Kyle Sobczak on guitar, the band on this LP has added layers of backup vocals (including multiple tracks of gargling, which Kozel describes as “the new reverb”) and additional instruments such as harp, trumpet, banjo and mouth harp to build these full-body indie-pop tracks with a touch of lo-fi for good measure.
Check out two tracks from the band below and make sure to pick up Great Vacation! on the Silence of Sound imprint.
