Just three days into my trip to Panama, my Panamanian friends have introduced me to a well-respected local band called Señor Loop. Their song “Insensato” became an anthem among the youth in Panama a few years back and remains a crowd favorite to this day. It’s accent of folk instruments over a chill, rock beat make it easy to understand why “Insensato” became such a hit. Panama’s fledgling cultural scene is full of promise and the hope is one day bands with the musical caliber of Señor Loop will gain mainstream acceptance both locally and internationally. Though a small country, Panama’s cultural fusion and geopolitical importance in the region make it no small contender to other countries in Latin America that have left their mark in the artistic world. I say, tredge on.
