I first came across the musician James Baker of the one-man band Implosion Quintet when checking out the site of super overpriced Chinese worker shoes, where some of his music was streaming. “Dope”, I thought; the instrumental hip-hop inspired track mixed in with Asian string instruments (which one, specifically, I don’t know) was perfect, mellow. Through that I found Implosion Quintet and the manic mash up of sounds – accordions, drums, electronic instruments, drums, among others – and cheeky arrangements that defy the AABA or ABA sequences our radio-friendly selves are used to. You’ll think you’re listening to two songs at once, or watching a Fellini film and John Wayne film simultaneously. Yes, it’ll take you there.
Last fall I got in contact with James and the result is – I’m the official vocalist for Implosion Quintet! We’re slowly but surely commencing the collaboration process to bring a new IQ EP sometime later this year or early next year. But until then, Implosion Quintet has a few EPs AND free downloads on the IQ Bandcamp page.
In the next few months, there will be a CD giveaway of IQ’s latest album, The Future Sound of Yesterday, so keep your eyes peeled for that one!
