I first saw Canadian rapper Baba Brinkman perform when I was in college in support of his show, Rap Canterbury Tales (in case you missed that – a rap version of Chaucer’s Canterbury Tales). A self-described “rap troubadour” with a master’s degree in English, Brinkman has toured the Fringe Festival circuit extensively and has embarked on a few college tours. In 2009, he collaborated with a University of Birmingham professor to create the Rap Guide to Evolution, Darwin’s theory set to music.
Recently Brinkman released a new mixtape, The Rap Guide to Human Nature. His ability to explore literature, science and other issues through hip-hop’s artistry truly show how the genre can be an effective, and cool, learning tool. How many other rappers will have you jamming to a tune about Charles Darwin? Not many.
