If your sick of LMFAO, like most other people, there is a healthy alternative for you  that comes via the city of angels and it might just be the perfect prescription for your dance rock blues. I am of course talking about LA duo Dr. Hollywood who have just released their debut, self titled EP. I was treated to a copy of the EP and can say that it is a must buy. It provided the right amount of fun and chillaxness (yep, new word) that I needed at the time and I believe it can do the same for you.

Dr. Hollywood is made up of Louie Rubio and Alex Larson who have been good friends since high school. They formed the group at the end of college as a production outfit to write music for local talent. After working with a few artists, they teamed up with producer Richard “Segal” Huredia who helped Dr Hollywood add the “spit and shine” to their productions.

First off, Dr Hollywood is pure pop, and great pop at that. Their songs are radio ready, but don’t have the same vibe/feel as most of the stale pop music out there now a days–It truly is on another level. I really dig how they incorporate lots of guitar and rock elements (“Smashing Bottles”) into their electro-pop productions. There are no cutting synths, or 4×4 beats in this music, just smooth chords, dreamy guitars, dance beats and a pop sensibility that will be hard to forget.

The other great thing about this music, and probably while it work as well as it does, is the dynamic of their vocal work.  You have one singing these sultry, dreamy  hooks with a slight touch of Auto-Tune for some flair, while the other is rapping (or they have guest spots from fellow emcees). You know you have a good Emcee when you realize you are listening to the lyrics more so then the music. This brings me to the next point, what also makes Dr. Hollywood stick out in my book are the lyrics. They are not serious, but aren’t a joke, just an exploration about life, friends and the good times they have living the Hollywood life, nothing more, nothing less. (Check out songs such as “69 Chevy” and “Throwing Bottles”)

Just when you thought that pop music in this day and age has plateaued, you get something like Dr. Hollywood to prescribe the right medicine to save the day. Check out their 2nd single “Partners in Crime (ft. Ras Kass)” below and  pick up their EP from all fine digital retailers.
