If you hear a banjo laced over electroclash beats, do not be alarmed. You are not in a parallel universe were the banjo surpassed the guitar, you are in the musical world of Cincinnati’s The Seedy Seeds. While the rest of the world is fusing indie rock with electornic music, The Seedy Seeds decided to incorporate their love of folk music into their sound thus creating what some peeps are calling folktronica.

The concept for the band was born out of a casual conversation in late 2005, in which the founding members. Mike, Margaret and Brian, hypothesized performing as a group with the instruments they owned but hadn’t yet learned to play. The Seedy Seeds began writing, performing, and recording music shortly thereafter.

They band has recently released their sophomore LP, Count the Days, and it is just chock full of melodic, upbeat, eclectic pop songs that will get your feet tapping. One of the really cool things about the tracks on the album was the vocal interplay between Margaret Darling and Mike Ingram. Although Margaret’s vocals lead the way in most of the songs, Mike’s harmonies  are just loud enough in the mix to add some depth and variation to the youthful, fun lyrics. The songwriting is done very well with a heaping amount of pop to go around a few times.

I have to say that the balance between acoustic and electronic instruments on this album is perfect. There is never too much of each and the vast differences between two two genres make for something fresh and unique–and man, that banjo is killer on the album (no joke). All the songs on this album were very pleasing to listen to, but some of the highlights, were the upbeat “Drive Me to the Center”, the chorus chanting “My Roots Go Down” and the postal service-esque track “August Eyes”

The Seedy Seeds sound is truly unique and original and most definitely deserves a listen or two. You can pick up Count the Days from all fine digital retailers, and if your going to be at SXSW they will be playing a few shows.
