Album Review: Awesome New Republic – Hearts

Awesome New Republic is a 2-piece indie band from Miami, FL comprised of core members Michael John Hancock and Brian Robertson featuring touring/studio drummer Jorge Rubiera. Both graduated from the Frost School of Music at the University of Miami. They self-released their first album Awesome New Republic So Far in 2005.

After cultivating their sound for the past 3 years as well as a successful 2008 CMJ, the band headed back into the studio to complete Rational Geographic Volume I, the first in a series of 3 volumes that was released in 2009. After tons of shows, rave reviews form the media, they have finally released their latest LP, Hearts.

Hearts is an amazing album from beginning to end, although a few of the songs came from the Rational geographic Series, their selection for the final track listing was perfect. On it they have 11 tracks that give some soft, some loud, some dirt, some clean and everything in between.

The sound they have captured on this album blends indie, electronica and pop all into smooth creamy eargasms. Every track is enjoyable and has a great replay value. In fact if you love it after the first listen, then I promise you it will be one of your new favorites. (I’m gonna go out and say it, def one of the better albums to come out in 2009)

A few things that works really well for Hearts are the falsetto harmonies that are layered throughout every track. Their vocal tones in harmony give this album the extra polish to go far and beyond the other “stuff” out there. They also balance the electronic sound against the acoustic sound which gives you the best of both words. Another great part of the album is done with the drumming. The fills and beats vary a lot and like the other instruments, make good use of electronic and acoustic drum sounds.

Some of the stand out track on the album are, well, the whole album.

Just go out and get this album
