LDN’s finest grime rapper, Lady Sovereign, is back with a new album, Jigsaw, which was released on April 7th Stateside (April 13th in the UK). The self-described “midget rapper” first hit the scene Stateside in 2006 with the release of her debut Public Warning and her smash single, “Love Me or Hate Me”. A lot has happened in SOV’s life since the days of Public Warning: failed relationships, getting dropped from Island/Def Jam (she was the first non-American artist signed on the label), and starting her new label, Midget Records.
Jigsaw is definitely not a cohesive album and it sounds like Lady Sovereign’s trying to find a sound that is her. This album is not Public Warning, so if that’s what you are expecting, you are in for a surprise. The album Jigsaw features “So Human”, which samples The Cure, title track “Jigsaw”, and the hit single “I Got You Dancing”. She does a lot of singing on this album over electrobeats (listen to “Pennies”) which is out of character with what we’ve seen from SOV, but she definitely gets points for trying and going against the grain – her old stuff.
All in all, Jigsaw is an interesting record, it’s not anywhere near as fun or cheeky as Public Warning, but this album is all about growth and change, which ain’t always pretty.
