Barbara was started by Derek Stephens, a classically trained pianist/folk singer and Frank Eybsen, an underground hip-hop producer. Frank was living in Santa Monica when he met up with Derek who was traveling across the country. Derek started to experiment with Frank’s equipment and they soon realized that they had similar musical tastes. Derek eventually moved out to Santa Monica with his friend Jerrod Thompson, enlisted Betsy Moyer as another singer/keyboards and thus recorded their debut EP, Robopopironica.
Barbara is best described as both a mix of electro-pop and hip hop with some really serene, distinct vocals from both Derek and Betsy. Check out the down-tempo, spacey, fits the mood for this rainy afternoon track from the EP called “Moon Trip.”
