The Amplifetes are a brand new 4-piece band from Sweden. Being accomplished songwriters and producers on their own, the members have worked with names such as Kelis, Madonna, Grandmaster Flash and Peter Bjorn and John. Occasionally they have crossed paths, but it wasn’t until the past year did the guys combine their talent.
At first listen I was not sure what to think about them. They say that their “influences start somewhere around the 60s Psychadelia of Roy Wood and Velvet Underground, spiral through the 70s brilliance of The Electric Light Orchestra and The Ramones, via early Elvis Costello – New Wave and the different shapes of David Bowie straight into Chicago House.” I don’t know what they were talking about because their first single, “Its My Life”, is nothing like that description. The track, which was recently in a promo campaign for Italian fashion house Roberto Cavalli, is a straight up electro club jam.
The other track they sent, “Whizz Kid”, is the exact opposite of the first, and more likely the sound they were trying to describe. In this track there were elements of electronica, rock as well as some soul that reminded me of anything the Goirlliaz would do, in fact the lead singer’s voice has a similar tone to Gorillaz front man Damien Albarn.
The 2 songs were more than enough to wet my appetite and my curiosity to explore more. The Amplifetes will be releasing their debut in the near future, so look out for them
