I just heard “Vanessa” by Grimes the other day and became INSTANTANEOUSLY obsessed, and also simultaneously viewed this video edit from Goddard’s Alphaville, which is haunting and fits perfectly. Not to mention, Anna Karina, is one of my favorite 60’s style icons. It’s always very exciting when you hear something that is RIGHT up your alley.
Grimes is Montreal based artist, Claire Boucher. I am in love with her soft sensual breathy eerie poppy semi-childlike vocals, and her use of lo fi dark samples and synths. “Vanessa” is on a split EP called “Darkbloom” with artist D’Eon that comes out today, April 19th on Arubutus Records/Hippos in Tanks. Dark Dance Pop is where its at, at least to begin…. or end… one of those lovely… sweet…. sugar nights .
