This past Saturday, the hippest of the hip made their way to Milk Studios in NYC for the the kick off event for the Creators Project, a new initiative by VICE and Intel to identify leading artists across the world who are pushing creative boundaries through technology. Mark Ronson, who spoke and dj’d at the event, called it a Disneyland for hipsters, and that is the plain and simple truth. Besides having really cool, interactive art pieces, they had performances from artists, some who haven’t played in ages, as well as free hamburgers, hot dogs, alcohol and gelato. If you were in Milk Studios you really had no reason to leave the 8 floor place.
Checking out the art was fun, especially Muti Randolph’s “Imagem” which consisted of 6,144 light bulbs hanging from strings that reacted to movement with bursts of sound and color, but the the main thing at The Creators Project was the music. They brought in The Rapture and Interpol, both haven’t played a show in ages, as well as Sleigh Bells, Gang Gan Dance, Die Antwoord, Mark Ronson, Neon Indian and special guest MIA (more on that later). I finally got to see the Rapture play (been wanting to for a while) and they did not disappoint, cowbell and all they played all of their popular songs and the crowd was loving it. We also saw the secret, not so secret, performance by MIA who came out with multi-colored hair and the craziest light show ever– I’m talking about seizure inducing light show. She opened up with “Born Free” then played some more new tracks and ended with “Paper Planes” by bringing out BK hip-hop duo Ninja Sonic. Together they must have played a 10 minute version of the song before ending the night.N.A.S.A was dj’ing later, but i was spent by that time
Overall, The Creators Project was a success and the other 4 events, taking place around the world, will be no different
Check out some of the pics from the show below.
