There is nothing better than putting on a brand new album of a band you have never heard before and realizing how good they are and more so, how much potential they have. That was the feeling I got when I first put on Quilty.
Quilty is a Brooklyn based indie-rock band that I can’t seem to ignore. I’ve listened to their LP, Clover/Coriander, at least 5 times since I got it yesterday and I can tell you it only gets better with each consecutive listen. The sound they have created is very reminiscent of the 90’s alt-rock scene that nurtured the beginnings of my musical explorations.
You can tell that Quilty are one of those bands that are taking the DIY route. The CD played more a like a demo then a polished LP and that’s a good thing because it lends more authenticity and credibility to the music they are creating. The tracks on the album, are not fast paced, but more of the head nodding, feel-good type of sound, the kind that will never get stale.
There is something very gritty, raw, and emotional in their music and its really brought out with the dark, but hypnotizing vocals of lead singer Sarah “Sadie” Dupuis. The tone and delivery of her lyrics, which go from happy to angry and everything in between, is amazing. When you pair her voice with the lo-fi grungy arrangements below it you have a fresh sound that you don’t find now a days. Another thing I dug about the album was how their jamming work really plays a role in the music. In a lot of their tracks they break into these think walls of sound weaved with crazy guitar solos, vocal samples and noise, it is sonic chaos, but oh so good.
My favorite track on the album was their incredible track, “Supernova.” (the track straight up reminded me of “Black Hole Sun” by Soundgarden) The hook of the song is perfect, the sound is spot on and the music is full of so much feeling and emotion that to turn it off would be a true shame.
Hands down, Clover/Coriander is up there in my top 3 favorite album of the past few years….These guys and girl are definitely on to something.
enjoY!
