There seems to be a trend coming out of Brooklyn these days in the indie rock scene. Take some ambient indie rock, add a little folk and spaced-out airy vocals and you most likely will have a hit. Prime examples include Animal Collective and Grizzly Bear and now we have struck gold with Monogold.
Monogold, a 3 piece also hailing from Brooklyn, released their debut EP, We Animals, back in September. With it comes a trip into a spacy, dream-like world surrounded by ambient guitars, falsetto vocal stylings and catchy melodies. The great thing about this album is that overall its keeps its core sound, but adds different elements in each one of their songs that make them enjoyable to listen to over and over again.
With “Pines” they take a more downbeat approach slowing it down a bit to catch you in their net with their sweet organ use that sustains throughout the song gluing it all together. With its simple drum beat you automatically get transported to that dream world that is hard to escape. Then you take a track like “Dead Sea Minerals” and you experience something totally different. From the first 10 secs your tapping your toes and when it eventually gets into the chorus you can’t help but to just love the style, arrangement, and sound.
The only problem I find with this EP is that there is not enough songs to satisfy. Definitely check out this album.
