What to say about the new album from David Guetta….
First impression, not very impressed. David Guetta has reached a new realm of pop (A realm I’m not sure I’m a fan of). A lot of the tracks on the album, to me, sounded like his last album, Pop Life. (especially the tracks with Chris Willis) Nothing really new exciting on this album except for a few tracks. The tracks where he did experiment outside of his usual fanfare were quite good.
The Good
I was very impressed with the Track “Choose” which had Ne-Yo and Kelly Rowland on vocals. The track is very dubish and the vocal melodies on it are so catchy that at the end of the song you want to press repeat.
Another stand out track was ‘Memories” featuring Kid Cudi. It seems anything this guy puts his voice over is gold, and this one was no exception. The track featuring Akon, “Sexy Bitch” is another golden one. On this one you can hear the contributions each artist put into this track and like the previous two is a pleasure to listen to (listen to that airy synth melody in the background)
The odd track on the album for me was “Toyfriend” featuring Wynter Gordon. This track was definitely outside the sound of Typical Guetta and he nailed it, I think its a sleeper hit.
The Bad
Any song that featured Chris Willis, “Gettin’ Over” and “Sound of Letting Go” sounded exactly the same as any other track Mr. Willis has been featured on in the past. Fail.
Also, the whole collab situation between Guetta and Will.I.Am from the Black Eyed Peas (a remix of “I Gotta feeling” and ” I want to Go Crazy) was not a highlight for me. The Remix of “I Gotta Feeling” was boring and stale, however, there was some salvation in the original production “I Want to Go Crazy”. This track is definitely one that will get people pumpin’ their fist and moving in crazy ways on the dance floor.
Conclusion
All the tracks on this album are pure Top 40 pop, which is not a bad thing at all, but not what I wanted to hear. I’m actually surprised Britney Spears or Rhianna’s camps’ haven’t reached out to him to produce some tracks because their voices would work perfectly for these tracks.
On this album I wanted to hear something different from Guetta. I’m not saying that I hated the album, but what I got was more of the same–a continuation of Pop Life.
Maybe next time
EnjoY!
