Transit Venus is the brainchild of graphic designer and musician Jean Goode and guitarist Walter Rafael that culminated in the independent release of their 2008 album, Change Doesn’t Change. Jean’s throaty vocals fit perfectly with the uptempo rhythms provided by Rafael. Her harmonies, however, aren’t always as seamless as they could be, such as the backup harmonies she lends in “Light Years Away” when some of the lines sound slightly off key. The album sounds raw and unpolished at times, the wonder being that it sounds as if you are listening to them live at an undisclosed venue. All of the imperfections and raw energy of a live show are encapsulated in this production. The dark sound and lyrical content of this album makes it feel futuristic and dystopian in tunes such as “This Is”, their first single. It’s such a rich album and the music will undoubtedly leave an impression on it’s listeners.
Unfortunately, according to their website, Transit Venus is a one-album project that may be on hold indefinitely. As far as I know they never performed public shows which is a shame as I think they would be friggin awesome on stage. I hope this isn’t the last time we hear from Transit Venus.
