The people who run the lackluster/stale award shows like the Grammys say they lose more viewers each year, and that they are trying to find new ways to bring the viewers back. One suggestion, which I believe they will try to focus on, is the entertainment portion of the program. Instead of focusing in on the awards themselves, they hope people will watch the show to see the artists. Granted, a lot of viewers will tune into watch the performances, but do we really want or need to see the BEP perform “I Got a Feeling”, a track that has been so over played this summer? Or Lady Gaga doing “Poker Face” running around in a Kermit costume showing her little pecker? (Which she was nominated for–don’t know why because there are much better songs than that, that should have been in the running). I sure won’t tune into to see a performance like that, I’ll just watch it on YouTube the next day.

Maynard James Keenan, lead singer of Tool, had this to say about the award show, which I totally agree with:

“I think the Grammys are nothing more than some gigantic promotional machine for the music industry. They cater to a low intellect and they feed the masses. They don’t honor the arts or the artist for what he created. It’s the music business celebrating itself. That’s basically what it’s all about.”

With that in mind, here is my suggestion to make the Grammys more attractive to all and get the viewership they want: don’t only include the mainstream artists that we hear about over and over on MTV. Now a days, the music community and the public are infused with many different types of music from all over the world. The influence of the internet, file sharing and free form social collaboration has allowed artists to collaborate creating new sounds and genres of music week after week. The influx of this massive change in how music is created as come to the point where music industry leaders must start to look beyond the top 40 lists they create and begin to acknowledge the talent beyond the Beyonce’s and Britney’s of the music industry.

A prime example of a group who deserves more recognition would be Phoenix, whose latest album, Wolfgang Amadeus Phoenix, was brilliant. It was so good that production houses have used their songs in commericals and theatrical trailers to promote products such as the Cadillac SRX and movies and T.V. shows such as “Cougar Town”, “Where the Wild Things Are”, “New York I Love You”, USA Networks “Royal Pains” and everyone’s favorite “Entourage”.   Also, lets not forget the tons of remixes done of many of their tracks; a sure sign that Pheonix has some good music.

Another example of an artist who deserves more recognition would be  Asher Roth who has blown everyone away with his lyrical skills and catchy beats. Where is he in this 52nd annual award show? Other examples include Calvin Harris, The Knux, Empire of the Sun, Animal Collective, Metric, N.A.S.A, Chester French, and many more. They all deserve some consideration.

The music industry is in a revolution of sorts with our generation (the 80’s babies) leading the way. It is not like it used to be back in the 90’s. It’s in a new state of evolutionary infancy, one that is very malleable. The National Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences should take a look at hypem or last.fm and discover artists that may deserve consideration for these prestigious awards. Once they have a wider grasp of this evolving industry and what the people want to hear, not only will they get the viewers they so desperately want, but that recognition alone will also bring back the appreciation the public once had for these award shows. On a side note, lets be honest, without new music this world would suck.

I might not even turn on the Grammys this year. If I do tune in, it will only be to see if my predictions were correct and so I have something to talk/rant about the following day. Oh and to see LL Cool J host. Deep Blue Sea anyone?

TV tends to just be background noise for me so it’s a rarity that I’m actually paying attention to the tube. Then last night, after twitter overflowed with tweets about Kanye upstaging poor Taylor Swift,I tuned in. I debated about posting on this but then, I saw that Lil’ Mama tried to upstage Jay-Z and Alicia and decided that the VMA’s just went to hell. What is this? The recording communities version of a gang war? Then you had Gaga prancing around with a wreath on her head and a blood packet dripping from her chest. Not to mention her covered face when she accepted her new artist award. What is this?!

MTV has already shot to shit with it’s zillion reality shows and 0 music videos (RIP TRL *sniff sniff*). The VMA’s is the ONE shot a year we have to honor the videos that are never ever shown on the network. Why ya’ll gotta ruin it by making statements and shit?

Oh and um, a message to those “upstagers”…
Kanye, oh Kanye. We love your music but you’re a major asshole. You’re almost as famous as you think you are. Lil’ Mama, much love but girl you needed speech lessons after your first season of “America’s best Dance Crew”. I’d keep is classy and sassy just a lil’ while longer before you start messin’ with the J to the Z.

After releasing their first single “Can’t Shake Your Love” a little while back, The Knocks are back with a brand new remix of D.C. EmCEE Wale‘s single “Chillin”

The Knocks have totally re-worked the track to give it this disco-pop feel that is nothing like the original. Unfortunately, Lady Gaga is in on this track, and I personally think she takes away from it (not to mention the hook sort of sounds like something M.I.A. would have done).

Kudos to The Knocks, and a big thumbs down to Gaga.

So I MUST have been living under a rock for the past month or so to have missed this gem of a track. The uberlicious rapper that is Wale dropped and popped his track “Chillen” ft. Lady Gaga in the beginning of June. The track has a very heavy M.I.A feel coming from Gaga. So much so that if I didn’t see Gaga in the video, I would have forgotten that M.I.A has “retired”. I guess this track it shows Gaga’s versatility? Humm… I’m not sure how I feel about Gaga spurting M.I.A flava…(psst M.I.A puhleze UN-retire!).

Wale‘s rap and lyrics are phresh (yes with a P! don’t hate). I could definitely jam to this with my drop top down cruzin to the beat. That’s if I had a car… or even a license. ::shifty eyes::

Lady Gaga performed a rendition of her hit “Poker Face” on Ellen which hit the internet yesterday but her official page says she’ll appear today May 12th. Lady Gaga, I’ve been listening to you for a while now. I get your image and that you’re all “new age and spacy” but what’s with the solar orbit going on around your head? I can handle the bow made out of synthetic hair, your pretty sweet clear piano and even the plastic bubble outfit you wear on tour but an orbit?! Let’s come back down to Earth just a little bit. Your first “look” is so drastic, what’s gonna happen for your next album? I think you’ll give us a heart attack even if you “dress down” whatever that means…

So, Lady GaGa preformed on “The View” today and despite having a mild case of the fugs, girl can SING!! This ain’t no Britney voice over shit (Sorry Brit Brit). These are true vocals. Prepped diaphragm and everything. Barbara Streisand/ Christina Aguilera type shit. I don’t understand why after she’s done with her performance, she gives the crowd such a mousy “thank you”. Come on GaGa you gotta do better than that if you’re gonna be a true pop star!

Update: I just watched this all the way through and before they do a camera close up of her face, she put’s on her big jeweled sunglasses. Aww, who wrote that into her performance? It’s part of her image huh? Yeah, right… whatever girl you can SING. I love your music.

New remix from MESSKID of the new Lady Gaga Single – Poker Face

Im a fan of this track, its downtempo feel really gives it this deep locked into the groove feel which you don’t find a lot with remixes of these uber pop songs. The dark piano stabs throughout give it this mysterious feel that makes you wonder what else is to come.

The other great thing about this song is that its not too complicated. It’s very simple arrangement which in my opinion adds more to the trak.
