CMJ Day 3: Blood Red Shoes (@bloodredshoes)

BoomBoomChik — Mon, 25 Oct 2010 15:15:56 +0000

The last act for the night at the Rock Shop was Blood Red Shoes, an alternative rock duo from Brighton, England. They are fairly new over here, but across the pond they have released 2 albums and gained some fame when one of their tracks was in the Scott Pilgrim v. The World Movie. This simple drummer/guitar lineup is raw and high energy punk rock with melody. Check out their latest LP, Fire Like This.

CMJ Day 3: Apache Beat (@apachebeat)

BoomBoomChik — Mon, 25 Oct 2010 14:45:16 +0000

Apache Beat was another act I wanted to see and they didn’t let down. These prog rockers hail from Brooklyn and are like the psychedelic version of the Yeah Yeah Yeahs. Definitely check out their debut LP, Last Chants.

CMJ Day 2: Holy Ghost! (@HolyGhostNYC)

BoomBoomChik — Fri, 22 Oct 2010 21:30:38 +0000

The last stop was NYC’s Holy Ghost! I missed them when they played at Summer Stage this year, but not this time. This DFA signed band put on a dance party that had the whole crowd moving. Bravo Holy Ghost!, it is one dancing good time (minus the one annoying drunk chick in the front).

CMJ Day 2: The Knocks (@theKnockz)

BoomBoomChik — Fri, 22 Oct 2010 21:08:26 +0000

Next was to Bowery Ballroom for the late show with The Knocks. This was their very first performance as a live ensemble and I couldn’t have imagined a better way to start it off. You had go-go dancers on both sides of the stage with a huge ass lighted sign that reads, The Knocks, glaring at you if you are up front. Through live percussion, sampling and synths, The Knocks were able to transfer their dance/dj sound into a live, energetic performance.

Check out a video as well as their new single, “Dancing With the DJ” below.

CMJ Day 2: The Drums (@thedrumsforever)

BoomBoomChik — Fri, 22 Oct 2010 14:00:40 +0000

The Drums I was excited for. I had heard good things about them. Their front man was a real character as well. He sang the songs from with a lot of feeling, not to mention was very spritely on stage. These indie rockers are on the verge of breaking out.

CMJ Day 2: Surfer Blood (@surferblood)

BoomBoomChik — Fri, 22 Oct 2010 01:00:15 +0000

Next was Surfer Blood who apparently were playing two shows last night . The band’s surf rock vibe and animated frontman sounded pretty good on stage. To be honest never really cared for them before, but after seeing this show im beginning to feel them some more. More tunes can be found on their debut LP, Astro Coast.

CMJ Day 2: The Dewars

BoomBoomChik — Fri, 22 Oct 2010 00:00:59 +0000

Then we headed over to the Drums and Surfer Blood Show. The first band we caught was The Dewars. The band, led by twins, weaved their way through some experimental rock tunes that were a little off the beaten path. As they played on I slowly began enjoy their show. I’ll check them out further.

CMJ Day 2: Marnie Stern (@marniestern)

BoomBoomChik — Thu, 21 Oct 2010 23:00:22 +0000

The final act of the Terrorbird showcase was an artist that I had never head of before called Marnie Stern. Everyone was really excited to see her play, the place was packed from front to back. Next we hear a crunchy guitar being finger tapped and everyone starts to gets excited. BAM, we are hit with it, some fucking good, loud rock music, not to mention Ms. Stern is hella comedian. Rock On Marnie!

CMJ Day 2: Baths (@BATHSmusic)

BoomBoomChik — Thu, 21 Oct 2010 22:00:10 +0000

Next on the Terrorbird showcase was LA beat maker, Baths. This guy had the crowd moving with his chopped and mixed beats. That guy can twist knobs. Check out more of his music on debut his LP, Cerulean.

CMJ Day2: Revolver (@Revolverfrench)

BoomBoomChik — Thu, 21 Oct 2010 21:23:52 +0000

First up was the Terrorbird Showcase that was going on all day at the Cake Shop. French 3 piece folk rock band, Revolver, was the first band I saw. Their acoustic ballads with 3 part harmonies and an upright bass made these classically trained musicians a pretty good find. Check out more tunes on their recently release LP, Music For A While.

CMJ Day 1: @HomeVideoBand

BoomBoomChik — Wed, 20 Oct 2010 21:00:27 +0000

Next we headed back to the Knitting Factory to check out Home Video who are also a new favorite of mine. They have this really cool radiohead vibe mixed with dance beats that locks you in a trance.

CMJ Day 1: @Gold_Streets

BoomBoomChik — Wed, 20 Oct 2010 19:30:08 +0000

Gold Streets, hailing from the BK, was the next act. They had an this shoegaze, indie dance vibe to them that included an interesting set equipped with a microphone mic’d through a telephone receiver, really fun stuff. Definitely downloading their new EP, GO.

Music Video: Afrojack & Eva Simons – Take Over Control

BoomBoomChik — Wed, 20 Oct 2010 18:17:53 +0000

The wait is over – Afrojack and fellow Dutch artist Eva Simons have released the video to their hit song, “Take Over Control”. While the song is amazing (especially its extended version), the video leaves much to be desired. The songs great lyrics provided enough visuals for the director to go on: “Let’s go take a ride in your car/I will take the passenger seat.” I wanted to see that – Eva and Afrojack riding in a car on the open highway at twilight or whatever, but instead we get Eva with Lady Gaga “Telephone”esque background dancers hanging out in a schoolbus in the desert (equally Lady Gaga “Telephone”esque in its irony) and Afrojack making an appearance in two, maybe three scenes.I still love the song and I’m a fan of both Eva and Afrojack and I’m looking forward to more things from both of them.

What do you guys think?

BoomBoomChik — Wed, 20 Oct 2010 18:00:53 +0000

Next, we hit up Triple Down trio, Me You Us Them, who were playing at Spike Hill. Once again,we have another band that really needs to be heard alot more. They rock out hard.

CMJ Day 1: @killQuilty

BoomBoomChik — Wed, 20 Oct 2010 17:25:39 +0000

The festival known as CMJ has descended upon NYC for 5 days of music, parties and good times.

Day 1 had all that.

Quilty, who played at the Knitting Factory, rocked out with dirty guitars, wicked solos, and a trombone that mimicks a bass. It’s very raw and intimate sound, especially on stage. Their live show gets better each time. Someone needs to pick them up.

enjoy!
