Doorly, Skream, Rusko, are all making huge strides in the dubstep genre this year, but in a genre full of dudes, I’m glad to know there are some girls who are stepping up to the challenge. London duo She is Danger has accepted that challenge. Composed of producer/vocalists Maya Jane Coles and Lena Cullen, they have been likened to an electronic Portishead meets Burial with shades of Massive Attack.
Drawing influence from artists such as Bjork and Billie Holiday to Aphex Twin and Prince, the duo takes great pride in their productions by writing, performing, producing and even engineering all their own original music.
She is Danger is set to release their first single “Hurt You” from their forthcoming album due out in Spring of 2010. It will be available for download 12/14/09, and features both members on vocals and production.
The beat is dope. Their tracks blend and blur the worlds of dubstep, electronica, jazz, drum’n’bass, trip-hop, dub, tech house and ska to create a beautifully haunting sound. It bangs in just the right places, has an awesome wobbely bass that I’m sure will rattle your speakers and a melody that is instantaneously catchy. By listening to the lyrics, you can tell the track has a dark meaning which speaks of a bitter edged joy derived from the demise of a deceitful ex-lover.
I’m very curious to hear what the rest of the album has to offer when it is finally released in 2010. Check out the video to “Hurt You” below.
