ZEDS DEAD – Toronto’s Masters of Dubstep

We received a recent reader request for a post on Toronto’s super-hot dubstep production duo, Zeds Dead. Zeds Dead members Hooks and DC bring a no-holds-barred production style that will bowl you over with half-time “body blow” beats, buzzsaw bass lines, warbling synth mayhem, and video game sample blips and beeps.

Their ode to dubstep, “Here Comes The Boom”, says it all, paying tribute to the Jamaican origins of dub with a dancehall-style vocal which opens warning of the impending, massive bass drop. And drop it does! While these tracks will certainly sound cool on your computer or iPod, dubstep’s home is on gargantuan club systems where the bass heavy mixes force body motion more than invite it.

This talented production team has also built a reputation as remixers par excellence pulling from a vast array of source material (Radiohead, The Rolling Stones, The Moody Blues, Sublime), and molding it into their unique brand of dark club classics. Their treatment of “Eyes On Fire” by Danish trip-hoppers Blue Foundation is not to be missed.

Taking their name from a scene in the classic film “Pulp Fiction”, these producers leave a trail of acoustic carnage which would surely do Quentin Tarantino proud.

Uniforms (for the dedicated) is Swedish artistic collective that passed us a new track called “1020 Trickery Lane” which was released on the French Express Imprint. The trick that makes this track repeatable is the dreamy synth-pop sounds that comes from your speakers. Reminds me of Passion Pit; in other words, so melodically perfect that you can’t not like it

Junip’s New Album Streaming on NPR

Swedish band Junip will be releasing a new album, Fields, later on this month. Fronted by singer-songwriter Jose Gonzalez, who is popular in his own right, Junip also consists of Elias Araya and Tobias Winterkorn.

@PreciousWeapons Begin Headlining Tour

Semi Precious Weapons is on a roll. The band has spent the last nine months on tour with Lady Gaga and decided that rather than taking a break between the N.A. leg of the tour and the European part, they would hit the road to play their own 13-city “Dirty Showbiz” headlining tour.

I got a chance to see them when they performed an ‘intimate’ show in NYC and I highly recommend everyone just check it out for the experience. If your check out the pictures, you’ll know why.

Pretty much the story behind LA emcee/producer, Michael Nhat, is that he went a through a crazy amount of shit in his life and found an outlet to get it off his chest. That means intelligent hip hop with honest, upfront lyrics and catchy homemade electronic lo-fi beats.
