Atlanta, Georgia’s favorite raucous daughters, The Coathangers, return with the second installment in their series of four split 7″s on Suicide Squeeze Records. This time, The Coathangers’ effortless amalgam of garage rock righteousness, riot grrrl bad-ass-ness, and post-punk jaggedness is paired up with the propulsive proto-punk of their former tourmates in Nashville’s Heavy Cream.

With the first of The Coathangers’ split singles on Suicide Squeeze now out of print (the highly coveted pairing with Puerto Rican party rockers Davilla 666), it’s not hard to imagine the 750 copies of this 7″ (250 opaque red, 500) selling out fast. Grab it while you can.

The limited edition single will be available worldwide on October 2nd via Suicide Squeeze. The single features “Merry Go Round” as the A-side and Heavy Cream’s “Toasted” as the AA-side, along with artwork from Westin Glass of the Thermals.

The concept of a family is one of those ever-morphing ideas that is constantly growing and contracting as we stumble through life. Sometimes that means joy; far too often, there’s a great deal of pain involved. But whether it is the people that raised us, or the friends and loved ones that picked up where the birth family dropped the ball, we have a family we can call our own. It is in this spirit that Tom Filepp created his third full-length album We Are All Fire recorded under the name Cars & Trains. The idea was to create a narrative about family—a search for identity and a personal narrative expressed through electroacoustic pop—that pulled in as many members of Filepp’s musical family as he could get.

Though you might not be able to pick out their individual contributions, sprinkled throughout the album is the work of fellow Portland musicians like the Future Historians, Alameda, and the Ascetic Junkies, as well as Filepp’s labelmates Astronautalis, Rickolus, and Ceschi Ramos.

From that foundational idea, Filepp found confidence to explore the darker crevices of his musical psyche. Not with the intention of wallowing in the muck, but to shine some light and clear out the cobwebs, all through the skein of an Odyssey-like narrative that wends in some indelible imagery taken from the natural world. Stars, wind, waves, birds, trees, and, of course, fire all play prominent roles.

Like any great songwriter can, Filepp connects the personal and the universal beautifully. You can hear how these songs affect him through his poignant and gently piercing vocal performances.

He then balances out the emotion these songs stir up with fluttering downtempo beats, delicate acoustic playing, and the inclusion of strings, horns, and smatterings of electronic noise.

We Are All Fire is both a question and an answer. Filepp seeks to find out what family means in our digital age, and finds the connections he was looking for both in his own past and in his present. The key word in the album title is “we,” and that includes you too.

We are All Fire will be released on September 18th through Fake Four Records

Pan was formed in early 2010 by guitarists Ian Flegas and Nate Stewart, who had been playing music together since the early days of high school. Eventually joined by Ryan Hutchens and Dylan Dickerson on bass and drums, the group is dedicated to creating dynamic and uplifting instrumental anthems. The name “Pan” was inspired by the notion that “happy thoughts make you fly” and the group’s fondness for the film Hook. With this inspiring philosophy as their muse, Pan set off to bring their music to listeners everywhere.

In March of 2011, they released their first EP, Post Rock is Not Dead, which combined the contemplative soundscapes of Explosions in the Sky with edgier indie rock sensibilities, bringing a fresh and energetic spin on the post-rock genre, as implied by the title. The following August, Pan signed with Post-Echo, a rising collaborative record label based in the Southeast. Much of the following year was spent playing shows across the Southeast, including opening for indie luminaries such as David Bazan and Fang Island, who remains among Pan’s major influences.

In early 2012, Pan headed to Archer Avenue Studio in Columbia, SC to record their first full-length album, These Are the Things I Love and I Want to Share Them With You. With the help of studio engineer Kenny McWilliams, Pan was able to fully realize their vision- an album that was both expansive in scope yet more direct in appeal than their previous efforts. These Are The Things… also saw Pan experimenting with more diverse instrumentation, incorporating ambient synth lines, keyboards, and even vocals- most prominently displayed on their standout track “John From New York.”

Listen: Pan – “John from New York”

Pan wrapped up recording in under a week- a major feat, given the depth of the resulting material. After a mastering session with Dave Harris at Studio B in Charlotte, NC, the record will be released through Post-Echo alongside a companion remix album, with several tour dates to follow. As for the future? If their music is any indication, Pan is sure to find new and exciting ways to welcome whatever comes next. Post-rock is very much alive, and Pan has two fingers firmly on the pulse.

Dub Pistols have spent the past 15 years winning over audiences globally with their infectious blend of ska, dub, hip-hop, DnB, electronic and punk. Their fifth studio album, Worshipping The Dollar, is a collection of diverse tracks that showcases the band’s vast influences while remaining incessantly catchy throughout. Released today on Sunday Best Recordings, Worshipping The Dollar is now available via iTunes and all other digital retailers.

Album track “Countermeasure” shines with a hip hop-infused melody that begs you to move from beginning to end. For a taste of one of the many styles Dub Pistols tap into on the new record. The album also features the shimmering, horn-driven single “Alive,” and the band called on fans to participate in the creation of the track’s accompanying music video! Made up of crowd-sourced images taken with Instagram.

Listen: Dub Pistols – Countermeasure

Worshipping The Dollar sees guests like UK hip hop legend Rodney P., rising Barbados reggae act Red Star Lion, Ashley Slater (Kitten & The Hip) and Bunna join Barry Ashworth and his motley crew. The album marks a return to lyrical themes explored on earlier albums, with deeper, more conscious lyrics and what Ashworth describes as “a lot of food for thought.” Having played sold-out shows across Europe, Dub Pistols were voted Best Live Act by DJ Mag last year, and are currently in the midst of a string of UK summer festival dates. Stay tuned for more from Dub Pistols as they invade the US, and be sure to grab a copy of Worshipping The Dollar!

Wow!

So how long has it been since I posted something on BBC? Too long if you ask me. However, I have come out of retirement to share with you this awesome new band I was introduced to in the interim called South South Million.

Hailing from Detroit MI, this duo (with the help of some other talented musicians) creates a sample heavy, jazzed influence, lo-fi sound that truly mesmerizes you from beginning to end.

Besides having this wicked awesome sound going on, they are set to release their latest album, Wind Hand Caught In Door, on Brooklyn’s awesome indie label, Triple Down Records, on March 6th.

If you want to get a taste a of what these guys got, peep the teaser video they sent over to us that combines snippets of tunes from the album mixed with beautiful images od Detroit.
