Indie duo Pomplamoose have released a cover of Lady Gaga’s latest hit, “Telephone”. No, it isn’t a repeat performance of the video, but an indie rendition of the song. Worth the watch (or more appropriately, the listen).

Album Review: The Consulate General – Person Number

Continuing on this lo-fi indie streak I’m on, I give you The Consulate General, a new project led by Taiwanese-American Alexander Chen of Boy in Static, currently a resident of Sweden. A multi-instrumentalist who often performs live on viola, Chen´s first recordings were released in 2004 by Markus Acher of The Notwist, who later invited him on tour opening for 13 & God. Chen has also toured with Freezepop and Lymbyc Systym, and collaborated with artists such as Her Space Holiday, Helios, and Montag.

Chen is about to release his debut solo album, Person Number, which was crafted from a set of songs written and recorded after relocating to Swedend On the album, Chen is joined by a group of collaborators including Antoine Bédard (Montag), John Chao (of Misha), Ryan Fritch (of Sole & The Skyrider Band), and Simon Scott (of Slowdive).

like I mentioned earlier, his sound on this album is lo-fi indie pop. The songs are well crafted, laid back and are very minimalistic. But the minimalism makes the music so much more and only helps to give room for the emotional lyrics. What really shines through are the multitude of instrument arrangements on all his tracks. He makes great uses of the xylophone, strings, marimbas, accordions, even a double bass. The xylophone is the most predominant one on the album and just gives his tracks that little extra something.

Some songs to check out are the incredible catchy single, “What Time Is It Now”, which features vocals from Montag, “65 or Older” which has this incredible melodic hook, “Liesa Lietzkem” which fuses dissected IDM beats with this weird vocal synth sound, and “YWCA Trixie” which has this lo-fi, trippy middle eastern sound.

I had never heard of these guys until yesterday, but I’m glad I did because the album is definitely doing it for me right now. If you like the Notwist then you will like The Consulate General.

Person Number will be release don April 6th 2010.

This mashup here is a little different from the stuff Clockwork has done in the past, but its is still good none the less. I know all of you know the theme song from the show “The Office” (the US one), and I’m sure you all know who Weezy is. Now hear what they sound like mashed together. Surprisingly this track works real well, maybe to well.

Really digging this latest remix from LehtMoJoe. Fresh off of producing AnonymousCulture’s The Intervention, he has remixed Pantera’s hard hitting track “Cowboys from Hell” and turned it into an electro gem.

Man does this thing bang, the crunchy guitars, courtesy of Dimebag Darrell, just pierce through funky backbeat and Phil Anselmo’s screams give the track the energy that it needs to get the floor bumpin’.

Lost In Space: The Car Is On Fire

Monday afternoon is here and with it comes a track from Poland band, The Car is On Fire. Their story goes something like this:

In the 1960s, the government of Poland attempted to secretly join the so-called “Star Wars” program. Alone in this endeavor, however and with confidence in short supply, it failed to live up to the standards set by the superpowers of the time. Though it did manage to send three astronauts into space. “The Car Is on Fire” team was to fulfill a project known by the code-name “Ombarrops!”. Their research was assigned to Soma station, headed by John McEntire, well-known for his participation in such expeditions as “Tortoise”, “The Sea and Cake”, “Stereolab” or lately “Broken Social Scene”.

Unfortunately, on the way back home, their capsule ran out of fuel, leaving them all alone in the abyss of endless space until this day. Their country abandoned them a long time ago, so they’ve decided to send this message into the ether, hoping to be saved someday…

Colorado-based producer Pretty Lights, aka Derek Vincent Smith, has released his first EP, Making Up A Changing Mind, of an ambitious trilogy project. What makes this project cool is that Pretty Lights is putting himself on a tight deadline. In an effort to get his music directly to his fans as soon as it’s written, Derek will record the EPs only a few weeks before each release.

His music is a combination of electro and hip hop with dub overtones that pack a fresh and innovative sound. Using real instrumentation as well as some dope samples, his music is chill and laid back, but still packs enough energy to keep you on your toes.

The next two EP’s will be released on June 15th and October 12 of this year, but in the meantime check out his website for a free download of Making Up A Changing Mind.

Pretty Lights – I Can See It In Your Face

His name is Francois Peglau and he is a Peruvian/Argentinean/French musician that now lives in London. In Peru, he used to play in Los Fuckin Sombreros, but left for greener pastures. Those greener pastures led to his current solo project.

When he and his wife moved to London, they found themselves in a whole new world starting from scratch. He decided that it would be pretty cool to musically document their acclimation to European life. This led him to build a small studio in their apartment to start writing music that was inspired by these new experiences.

The best way to describe his music is lo-fi indie rock that is a throwback to 60’s style rock/folk pop with a modern electronic twist. What I’m really digging about this guy’s sound is his vocals. Besides the falsettos, he seems to manipulate them through generous eq’ing and effects. When you add that to the melodic song writing, you have something that is reminiscent of Neon Indian x The Beatles.

I always love when a producer/artist can drastically rip apart a song and remix into something completely different. This was the case with NY/Seattle duo The Soundmen and their remix of Snoop Dogg’s track “That Tree.” They took a typical sounding Snoop song and morphed it into a sweet indie electro pop track. Never did I think that a song could undergo such a drastic change. It is without a doubt worth checking out, you wont be disappointed.
