You never know how new music is going to pop up. Yeah, you have the the radio and channels like MTV2 (sigh, I can’t believe I had to type that), and of course the internet. Now that music is so easily shared and albums and single “leak” so easily, music is truly able to become absorbed and create new sound. The music industry no longer controls the music. With this in mind, as a music blogger, I hear numerous songs a day. They usually fall into one of three categories for me. One, yes, two, no, three, humm this is interesting… That’s how I felt when I heard “The Big Pink”.
An electro-rock duo, there’s some new music lingo for ya, The Big Pink started making in the UK back in 2007. With an avante-garde persona, Big Pink’s songs feel the perfect balance between the gritty rock feel of Grizzly Bear and the smooth pop rock ballads of the beloved Coldplay. Their first single, Dominos, off their album A Brief History of Love is already abuzz among music blogs and has been dubbed as one of the best songs of 2009, by Prettymuchamazing.com, beating out Lady Gaga’s Paparazzi and Little Boot’s Remedy.
Though officially a duo, The Big Pink adds members to their twosome when performing their art live. This is the piece that that makes them the most unique. Six, both male and female, band members take the stage pounding out each track with heart and passion.
Dominos, the first single off the album, is a electro-rock ballad with smooth ballad-like lyrics similar to those of coldplay and Maroon 5 with a gritty rock feel and electro synths. Though the song is enticing, the video brings more feeling to the experience of listening to the song. After listening to Dominos and the rest of the album, I got a good feel for The Big Pink’s purpose and message. Their album left me wanting more and I’m curious to hear how they will collaborate with other artists and take their sound and brand to the next level.
