Album Review: Crunk Witch – The Battle Beyond EP

Filed Under: Album Reviews,Electro,Rock & Roll

Crunk Witch is an Electro-Rock act from Presque Isle, Maine consisting of music artist/singer Brandon Miles, and jewelery and accessories designer Hannah Colleen. Formed in early 2009, after the release and subsequent touring of Brandon’s full-length ‘Kiss The Stars’, Brandon and Hannah decided to combine artistic forces and work as a team which is now awaiting their debut fall EP, The Battle Beyond.

While listening to this album, it reminded me of how much I really liked this genre back in college, the pouring of emotions into blissful catchy, often anthem-like rock tunes hit the spot back then, and after hearing this album, made me respect how unique this genre is, as well as giving me a sense of nostalgia.

Hard Electro-Rock with enough pop to go around is whats found on their 5 track debut album. Blending heavy drums, “brutal dance beats”, freaky synthesizers and vocals that dance a fine line between coarse wailing and soulful seduction, The Battle Beyond will make you want to listen again, and again, and again,

The tracks are short, have catchy hooks, and are straight to the point often fitting the typical format of a their “non-electro brethren” . The lyrics tend to fit with the genre, evoking the emotions they have felt for others, and in general the experiences of life. (“I see all these demons in you and I wont let you die”) One thing that was a little off-color for was the repeated references to Mary and Jesus, but maybe it was added to show a twinge of a dark soul.

Their first single “Battle Beyond” is an amazin track, and prob the one with the most mainstream potential (A Pumpkin Song runs a close 2nd). Although its only about 3 minutes long, it’s enough to know what these guys can do. “A Pumpkin Song” takes the opposite feeling of the single, giving it this seductive emotional ballad that compares himself to a rotten pumpkin, a metaphor that works well for the song.

If you were to take Thursday, Head Automatica, My Chemical Remonace, and raise it to the electro level you will have the prefect description of what Crunk Witch has to offer with this EP.

Expect a release date in October.

enjoY!
